How to Get Rid of Cat Pee Smell in Your Home

How to Get Rid of Cat Pee Smell in Your Home

Cat pee smell can be stubborn. You can clean the same spot over and over, only to notice the odor coming back a few days later. That's because cat urine can soak deep into carpets, furniture, and other surfaces, making the smell difficult to remove completely.

The best way to get rid of cat pee smell is with an enzymatic cleaner that breaks down the odor-causing compounds in cat urine. The cleaning method also depends on where the accident happened and how long the urine has been sitting.

We'll cover how to remove cat pee smell from different surfaces, how long it can take, and why the odor sometimes returns.

First, it helps to understand why cat urine smells so strong. Why cat pee smell is so stubborn

Cat urine is highly concentrated, which is one reason it smells so strong. As bacteria break down the urine, they release ammonia, creating that sharp, unpleasant odor. Cat urine also contains uric acid, which can leave behind stubborn residue as the urine dries.

This residue can settle deep into carpet fibers, furniture foam, and grout, where regular soap and water may not remove it completely. When humidity rises, the lingering odor can return. That's why a room that seems perfectly clean might start smelling like cat pee again on a rainy day.

An enzymatic cleaner is one of the best ways to get rid of cat pee smell. These cleaners use enzymes to break down urine residue and help eliminate the odor at its source. Unlike air fresheners that temporarily mask the smell, enzymatic cleaners target what's causing it.

What to use, and what to avoid

Use a cat/pet-safe enzymatic cleaner.
Do not use any of the items listed below in the area that needs cleaning, as they will most likely make it worse.

  • A cat may mistake the scent of ammonia-based cleaners for its own scent of urine and return to the same location to mark again.

  • Bleach, or other product combinations. Bleach will not eliminate uric acid, and when combined with additional products can produce harmful fumes. Do not combine any two products.

  • The heat from steam cleaning can cause the proteins contained within urine to become embedded in your carpet fibers and will therefore result in a lasting odor.

  • Scented sprays may cover up the smell temporarily, but they won't remove the urine causing it. Once the fragrance fades, the odor can return.

  • Essential oils can be harmful to pets, especially cats. The ASPCA warns that cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils and recommends avoiding their use in areas pets can access, unless they're supervised or a veterinarian has approved their use. For this reason, it's best to avoid homemade cleaning mixtures containing essential oils.

How to get rid of cat pee smell, step by step

The core method is the same everywhere; the by-surface sections adjust it.

  1. Locate each affected area. A UV blacklight flashlight can help you spot dried urine in a dark room. Mark each spot you find so you can treat them all. Even one missed area can leave a lingering odor.

  1. If the urine is still wet, blot the area with paper towels to absorb as much as possible. Then use a towel lightly dampened with cool water to blot the spot again. Avoid rubbing, which can push the urine deeper into the fabric.

  1. Pour the enzyme cleaner over the entire area of the stain. You should use a sufficient amount so that you are able to get to where the urine has traveled (not just on top). When using this product on carpet, make sure to saturate through the fibers to the backing.

  1. Do not shorten the contact period. This is the one stage that people tend to cut down on. Enzymes take time to break things down. Often times they take much longer than most regular cleaners. The label should indicate the length of time needed to allow for proper functioning. Make sure the surface remains moist during this entire time frame.

  1. Allow the area to dry naturally after the contact time listed on the cleaner’s label. Avoid using heat to speed up drying. Follow the product’s instructions if it recommends keeping the area covered or damp during treatment. If the odor remains after the area has fully dried, repeat the process.

Getting the smell out of carpet and rugs

This is the hardest surface, because urine sinks into the backing and the pad.

  1. Blot up as much as you can with cool water.

  1. Pour the enzymatic cleaner on generously, down to the pad, not just the fibers.

  1. Follow the enzymatic cleaner’s label for how long to keep the area damp. For deep carpet stains, the cleaner may need to reach the backing or pad. Cover the treated area only if the product instructions recommend it, then let it dry completely.

  1. Let it dry completely, then check. Deep stains usually take two passes.

Getting the smell out of couches and upholstery

  1. Check whether the cover is removable and washable before you start.

  1. Blot with cool water, then saturate the fabric with the enzymatic cleaner.

  1. Press it in to reach the foam, where the smell hides, then let it air-dry.

  1. If you have a dried-up stain, then you will need to do another round of cleaning with water and drying. One time usually doesn’t clear away an old stain.

Getting the smell out of a mattress and bedding

  1. Blot the mattress with cool water.

  1. Allow the area to be completely saturated by the enzyme based cleaner and then allow the required amount of contact time.

  1. Let it completely dry, and if possible stand the mattress vertically so that any trapped moisture will drain away. Trapped moisture is what causes the odor to return.

  1. Wash sheets and blankets according to their care labels. If the smell remains, use a laundry-safe enzymatic cleaner and wash them again.

Getting the smell off hard floors

Tile, concrete and sealed wood are the most forgiving.

  1. Wipe up the urine, then clean the spot with the enzymatic cleaner.

  1. Let the product remain on grout or bare concrete for a longer period of time because the product will be able to penetrate into the pores of these surfaces where the odor is trapped.

  1. When you are working with wood, be quick so that the liquid does not accumulate. Liquid can get beneath the finish and when it gets there, the odor will remain trapped and very difficult to remove.

How long before the smell goes away?

How long it takes depends on how deeply the urine soaked in, how long the stain sat, and how much time the cleaner needs to work. Fresh stains may respond to one treatment, while older stains can take several rounds of cleaning. Humidity can also make leftover odors more noticeable.

Why it still smells after cleaning

If you’ve cleaned and the smell is still there, it is usually because of one of the following: an area you didn’t find, an old stain that requires additional passes, or a spot that feels dry on top but is still wet underneath . The heat and humidity will activate the uric acid crystals, so that the smell may appear to be coming and going.

After cleaning the source, if there is still an unpleasant smell in the room’s atmosphere, the Clarifion ODRx is an air deodorizer. It freshens the air in your room. This product will not remove urine, nor will it take over the tasks you have completed prior to using the Clarifion ODRx air deodorizer. Consider it to be a “finishing” step for the air in the room, after the actual cleaning has been completed.

Why a cat pees outside the litter box

Getting the odor out of the carpet is only half of the solution. When a cat urinates outside of its litter box, those accidents will continue to occur until you have found the reason for them and that generally occurs in one of two categories.

A sudden change in litter box habits can point to a health issue that a veterinarian should check. If your cat starts urinating outside the box, strains to urinate, or urinates much more or less than usual, contact your veterinarian promptly. Straining with little or no urine can be an emergency.

Once a veterinarian has confirmed that there are no underlying medical issues causing the behavior, then it is typically related to how the litter box is set up. Some simple steps can help to avoid many of the common accidents that occur.

  • One litter box per cat, plus one extra. Three cats means four boxes.

  • Use unscented litter at a depth your cat prefers, and scoop daily.

  • Boxes in quiet, low-traffic spots, away from food and water.

  • Clean up after accidents thoroughly using a product that contains enzymes, so there will be no smell left behind to entice another occurrence.

Frequently asked questions

How long will a cat’s urine odor last?
Fresh stains may clear after one treatment, while older or deeper stains can require repeated cleaning. Follow the cleaner's instructions and allow the area to dry completely before checking for lingering odors.

Does vinegar eliminate the odor?
Vinegar may temporarily change how the area smells, but it isn't a reliable substitute for an enzymatic cleaner. For urine stains on carpets and upholstery, it's best to avoid vinegar and use a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner that targets the source of the odor.

Does baking soda work?
After an area has dried, you can use baking soda to absorb some of the surface odor. To do so, sprinkle the baking soda onto the dry surface, let it sit for a period of time, and then vacuum it away. Baking soda will interfere with the enzymes of a wet enzymatic treatment, so do not apply the baking soda directly over a wet enzymatic treatment.

What is the proper way to handle treating a stain on your sofa once it has dried?
You should re-wet the area with an enzyme-based cleaner, apply the cleaner to the foam by rubbing it in, allow the cleaner to dry, and then repeat this process until the stain disappears. Generally, when you are dealing with a dried-on stain, you will need to repeat this procedure multiple times before the stain is completely gone.

Why does it smell like cat pee when there is no cat in your home?
There is usually either an old undiscovered stain, a previous occupant’s pet, or a different odor that mimics the smell of cat urine such as certain types of mold, or even a plumbing problem. A UV light will help locate the source of the odor.

When should you take your pet to the vet?
A sudden change (i.e. straining, blood in urine, using the litter box too often/less than normal) may indicate a possible health problem requiring treatment.

Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh After Cleaning

Getting rid of cat pee smell starts with cleaning the source. But even after you've treated the affected areas, a room can still feel less than fresh.

That's where the Clarifion ODRx comes in.

Plug the Clarifion ODRx air deodorizer into a standard outlet to freshen the air in your room. Use at least one in each room.
